Creating an Epic: Where does one begin?

The process of making something believable to the average reader, especially if you are creating fiction, has to have very strong roots in reality in order to sell it to the reader. How does one achieve this? Research, research, research!

I had to first figure out what I wanted to write about. Then, when I decided that it was going to take place on a fictional planet, the 'real' work began! I had to figure out what kind of star system this planet existed in, how far away from the star it was, how long a day would be, how long a month, a week, a year would be.

Then I had to come up with land masses, a society, races of beings, cities, villages, a societal structure, and something unique about 'my' beings. What makes these creatures unique? What issue are they struggling with that will capture the reader's attention?

Obviously, this task is overwhelming and time consuming, so I made a decision early on to only establish the information necessary to tell the story. All the other details could be explored in other stories arising later.

So my journey into writing began, and 42 chapters later, and an Epic is born!
